Overview: Research shows that globally, more than a million plastic bottles are sold every minute. In New York, 30% of deposit bottles are not properly recycled. Recycling one ton of plastic saves 685 gallons of oil. As the public’s focus on the plastic waste crisis narrows, the world to find new ways to deal with bottles once they are thrown away.

New York is a “deposit” State wherein the Returnable Container Law applies and wherein persons redeeming empty beverage containers to stores are entitled to receive 5 cents for each such empty beverage container so returned and redeemed.

In New York City, the collection of empty beer, water, and soda cans and bottles rapidly became one of the major sources of income for homeless and underprivileged people. The gathering of abandoned beer, water and soda cans and bottles on the streets of New York City by “street people” has become a familiar sight. It promoted the dual benefit for the taxpayers of clearing the streets from empty beverage containers as well as obtaining increased revenue for these economically stressed people. It also enables them to provide for their necessities with dignity and without resort to public funding.

Better World Alliance, Inc. has formulated a program to redress this unfortunate state of affairs, which will restore this redemption income to the poor and homeless while correspondingly clearing the streets of the debris of uncollected, unremembered empty beverage containers. More than just restoring the status quo, New Hope Alliance’s program will generate funds for use in charitable services and projects to further benefit these people.
